→ character information

Series: Naruto
Name: Momochi Zabuza
Age: 26
Gender: Male

Appearance: Zabuza cuts an imposing figure, standing at six feet and weighing 159 pounds. He is trim and muscular, and also extremely tan. His eyes are brown and quite expressive. They have to be, because his entire lower face and neck are covered in a long strip of bandage. His teeth, though generally not visible, are sharpened to rough points. His hair is short, black, and unruly, and he wears his Kirigakure headband at an angle tied around his head. The plate with the symbol of Kirigakure, four squiggly lines, is above his left ear, and the knot holding the blue cloth tied on is over his right ear.

Zabuza has two usual outfits. The first is composed of blue corduroy pants, brown cow-patterned arm warmers that come up to above his elbows and leg warmers that go up to his knees and hook into sandals, and a black belt that loops around his neck and attaches to his pants, a buckle holding the end of the loop together. His second outfit is a black beater and black pants, with blue corduroy arm warmers and leg warmers that hook into a pair of sandals.

Personality: Zabuza is a violent person. He enjoys battle, and because he was trained as a ninja from a young age fighting is basically built into him. He is physically very strong, made obvious from the size of the sword he carries. He is also a very physical fighter, often attacking head on instead of relying on ninja arts. He is more than capable of killing people cold-heartedly, and has done so many times.

Zabuza has something of a roaring personality, prideful and boastful. He believes in his own abilities, and tends to laud his success even before he’s won. He hates to be bettered, but he does grudgingly recognize others’ achievements. Haku is an exception; Zabuza is in fact quite proud of the fact that Haku’s skills probably surpass his own. Zabuza is a gruff sort of person and can be rather rude, often saying just exactly what’s on his mind. He enjoys intimidating people, enemies and employers in particular and often will keep quiet to let his physical presence do the intimidation for him. But more than that he enjoys banter and will respect a person a bit more if they don’t back down from him. He really only acknowledges people according to their relevance to himself and how worthy they are of his regard.

Zabuza has a need for recognition that is usually covered by his own large ego. He hates having competition for rank or achievement. He aims for the top, willing to plan things out years ahead of time. He’s long-sighted and goal-oriented, not the type to let things he wants in the present get in the way of what he wants for the future. Zabuza puts his goals and ideals above any sort of common good, or even above his own or his allies’ needs, doing whatever it would take to reach them. He tends to use people as means to an end, though he makes it clear that that is his intention.

Zabuza has taken to heart the shinobi rule against showing the softer emotions, to the point where he believes it’s important to not even feel such emotions. He puts asides anything resembling emotion. Of course, his emotions are still there, just buried. It takes a great push to make them come through, but underneath it all he does care about Haku, so much so that he nearly got himself killed to take revenge for him.

Particulars: Ninjutsu: Zabuza was trained as a ninja, and can do a number of ninja arts. His ninjutsu are all water based. One such ability is to create a misty fog all around. He uses the mist to hide him while he kills his targets in complete silence. Another is to create water doubles of himself. He can also trap people in water bubbles, create dragons out of water, and cause floods of water to attack enemies.

Taijutsu: Zabuza is also highly trained in physical fighting. Dodging, jumping, punching, kicking, elbowing, throwing, and many other physical techniques come as second nature to him.

Weapons: Zabuza has training with all the typical weapons a ninja might use, like shuriken, kunai, or senbon. But mostly he relies on his sword, Kubikiri Houchou. The sword is nearly as long as Zabuza is tall, and it is at least a foot wide. It has a circle cut out near the handle, and a half circle cut into the blade that is ideal for decapitating enemies (in the sword’s name, Kubikiri refers to decapitation).

Canon History: Zabuza grew up in Kirigakure, the Village Hidden in Mist. Like other shinobi-to-be, he was trained in the way of the ninja. He was very good at all of it; perhaps too good. Kirigakure had a tradition where students graduating to become ninja had to pair up and fight to the death. Only half of all students could ever become genin, the lowest level of ninja. Zabuza put an end to that tradition, massacring every other student in his year.

That was only the beginning of his reputation. He moved quickly up the ranks in Kirigakure, and soon became a member of its ANBU, an elite assassination and tactical squad each ninja village has. There he learned about the human body in detail and learned how to use vital points for paralysis or death. He also became a member of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, the seven most elite sword-wielders of Kirigakure. It was there he got his nickname as the Demon of Kirigakure, and solidified his reputation. Through all the years, Zabuza was planning to overthrow the current Mizukage, leader of Kirigakure.

One snowy night, he came across a boy sitting on a bridge. He thought at first merely to mock the boy, saying that no one would want him because he has no dreams. But the boy surprised him, saying that they both had the same eyes. Intrigued, Zabuza paid him a bit closer attention, and noticed he had a kekkei genkai, a technique that cannot be learned, only inherited through genetics in certain clans. Between the boy’s comment and his ability, Zabuza decided to ask him to join him. The boy, named Haku, did, and happily.

It wasn’t long after Haku joined him that Zabuza attempted a coup d'état against the Mizukage. Unfortunately it failed, and he and his co-conspirators were forced to flee Kirigakure. Before leaving the village behind, Zabuza told Haku that from then on he wouldn’t need companionship, but a weapon to support his campaign. Haku agreed, and Zabuza started training him, teaching Haku all he knew about fighting, ninja arts, and pressure points. Haku became extremely good, and Zabuza came to rely on him for his skills.

Even though his first coup had failed, Zabuza hadn’t given up on his goal to be the leader of Kirigakure. For a few years they took odd jobs to support themselves, but eventually they became more serious about it, trying to raise the money for a second attempt on the Mizukage’s life.

One of those jobs, given to them by a man named Gato, was to go to the Land of Waves and kill Tazuna, a man who was trying to build a bridge from there to the main land. At first Zabuza sent out the Demon Brothers, ninja who had supported him in his coup. They failed, and Gato was greatly annoyed. Zabuza said he would go take care of it himself.

Zabuza arrived to kill Tazuna and found that Konohagakure’s copy ninja, Kakashi, and a team of genin were protecting him. Though Kakashi copied his water clone jutsu, Zabuza was able to trap him in a bubble of water. The genin were able to trick him into releasing Kakashi when one of them turned himself into a shuriken and got behind Zabuza.

Kakashi not only copied Zabuza’s next two jutsu, but bested his time at them, causing him to be swept into a tree. Kakashi was about to kill him when Haku arrived and put him into a deathlike paralysis and takes him away. The entire point of the exercise, though, was to allow Haku to see Kakashi’s abilities and understand them so that the next time Zabuza would be able to keep Kakashi from copying him.

In a week’s time Zabuza healed from his wounds, and the two readied themselves for another fight. Haku took on two of Kakashi’s three genin while Zabuza held Kakashi back with the threat against Tazuna and the third genin attempted a defense for the bridge builder. Zabuza surrounded the bridge with thick fog to attempt a silent kill on Tazuna, but Kakashi stopped him, taking Zabuza’s blade himself.

Zabuza avoided Kakashi’s copying Sharingan by using the fog to keep Kakashi from seeing him and the hypnotic aspect of the Sharingan by keeping his own eyes closed, but Kakashi used the blood on Zabuza’s weapon to track him; a jutsu scroll caused a pack of dogs to find him and hold him still for Kakashi. Just as Kakashi was about to hit him with a Lightning Blade attack, Haku jumped in between them, taking the attack and dying on the spot.

Zabuza was going to continue his attack and take advantage of Haku’s body keeping Kakashi still, but Gato appeared with a gang of thugs. Their employer revealed he’d only hired them, missing-nin who were hunted by their own village, because they were cheaper than other ninja, and the plan had been for them to die after killing Tazuna so that Gato wouldn’t have to pay them. After saying that, Gato kicked Haku’s body, showing his distaste for ninja.

At first Zabuza planned to merely leave, saying he was using Haku just as Gato was using him, but Naruto, one of Kakashi’s genin, made him realize how important Haku was to him. He then cried for Haku, and got in a rage at Gato. Both his arms had been rendered useless in his fight with Kakashi, so he ripped open the bandage covering his face with his teeth and received a kunai from his former enemies. He charges through the protection Gato had brought, ignoring injuries he received and giving back better than he got. Reaching Gato, he told him that he would see him in hell and kills him. Gato’s thugs then stuck him in the back a number of times. Regardless, Zabuza continued to make his way back toward Haku.

Unfortunately he didn’t make it. Gato’s thugs were planning to attack him more, but the Land of Wave’s villagers showed up and scared them off. Losing strength quickly, Zabuza asked Kakashi to bring him close to Haku so he could see his face. Reaching over to touch his face, Zabuza declared that he hoped he could go to the same place as Haku. Kakashi and his genin buried the two of them next to each other on top of a hill.

Crux: Zabuza’s heart stops only for a short time, coming back with a sluggish pulse. He awakes to find himself underground.

Tangent: Zabuza dug himself out of his grave to find that there is another grave marker beside his own. He assumed it’s Haku’s, and didsn’t notice, with all the disturbed dirt from his own grave, that Haku’s had been disturbed, as well. He dragged himself away from their graves and into the woods, where he was eventually found by a villager from the Land of Waves.

It took some time for his wounds to heal, but as soon as he was well he headed off. Oddly, his goal to become Mizukage seemed hollower without Haku. Remembering something he had overheard long ago, he headed out for a place called Soeldei; he didn’t really care where he ended up, as long as it wasn’t the Land of Waves.

Allegiance: Mafioso

Reason: Zabuza is accustomed to a shady way of life. He’s nearly unscrupulous, and mostly only looks out for himself.
